Artist statement

I find that the process of handbuilding allows a more intimate dialog between the material and myself. This dialog encourages the growth and evolution to come from within while being influenced by the outside world.

I start with clay slabs, extruded cylinders, and pinch pots which allow the intuitive interaction between my creative intent and the pliable form of the clay to take form. The texture is pressed into the clay using found objects, rubbing plates, commercial stamps, and bisque stamps at varying stages of construction. Each piece is selectively glazed to enhance the final form and interrelationship between a grouping.

My hand built clay creations are representational of my life experiences and personal journey. They reflect my world of curiosity and delight through the process of growth and evolution. Integrated relationships found in nature and in one’s personal life inspire my work. The placement of textures, pattern and form of each vessel are influenced by these visual experiences in my life. My goal is for these animated pieces to enhance the viewer’s daily experience with everyday objects.
